Landhaus in Veligosti

This 110-year-old house has been in family ownership for four generations. It is located in the village of Veligosti in the Peloponnese, about 2,5 hours from Athens.

The aim of the project was to convert this old farmhouse into a modern holiday retreat for the extended family, while respecting the building’s architectural heritage. Our interventions had to be very carefully designed and minimal.

Originally, the livestock was kept downstairs and the family lived upstairs.

When the family moved to Athens, the ground floor was converted into sleeping space and the upper floor into the living area.

We kept this configuration and added soundproofing to the bedrooms’ ceilings. We also kept the original red tiles in the ground floor choosing a matching reddish colour wash for the wooden beams on the ceiling.
To emphasise these original elements, we applied a light grey colour to the rest of the surfaces and the new built-in closets.

In the open-plan living space on the upper floor, we followed the same scheme: we applied a cool light grey on the ceiling and furniture emphasizing the wooden dining chairs and floor and the reddish armchairs. Although in this floor the room height is not big the ceiling has now a ‚lighter‘ feel.

Furthermore, on this floor we created a distinct kitchen area, with wood panelling and cupboards with a dining zone next to it. For this we designed a large solid oak table with heavy metal legs that has multiple functions:
It brings the family together for meals, it can be used as extra prep space for the kitchen or just be a spot to sit and work.

In the living room zone we kept the original reddish armchairs, with the focal point being the original fireplace.

The living room connects back to the kitchen via a built-in wooden window seat with extra storage inside.

Finally, we also repainted the staircase that connects the two floors in grey and reddish tones and created extra storage space underneath.
